Daniel L. Smith, M.D.
Co-Director of Short Term Medical Missions

Dr. Daniel Smith is a semi-retired cardiothoracic surgeon in Denver, Colorado.

He was born on August 5, 1940 in Denver, attended Denver Christian Schools followed by Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the University of Colorado Medical School. After interning at the Naval Hospital in San Diego and spending 3 more years on active duty, he returned to the University of Colorado to do a residency in general surgery followed by a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of California and then started active practice in the Denver area in 1976.

He married Betty Brandt in 1966 and they have 2 daughters and now 4 grandchildren. After being broken by God in 1996, he began to explore involvement in medical mission projects.

An exploratory trip in June, 2000 with Dr. Mark Sheehan led to his semi-retirement and involvement and leadership in a long term medical mission project in Cambodia. He has been to Cambodia twenty times in the last 12 years leading short term medical teams”. On May 10th, 2014 Dan received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities Degree from Colorado Christian University for his ongoing work in Cambodia.
